The Global Water Award aims to recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of water and sewage treatment and desalination, with a focus on innovative technologies. ABB's use of smart water management technology has increased the flexibility of Wellington Water's water supply and drainage network, enabling it to better prepare for the future, and has therefore won the "Smart Water Project of the Year" award.
ABB's smart water management technology combines instrumentation and digital solutions to help Wellington Water manage its infrastructure in a sustainable, economic, and safe manner.
At the Global Water Summit in Berlin, Germany, the cooperation project between ABB and Wellington Water Company won the 2023 Global Water Award for "Smart Water Project of the Year". After using ABB solutions, Wellington Water can measure and store water flow data in real time, saving up to 10% of energy per month.
In order to greatly improve the flexibility of its drinking water infrastructure, Wellington Water has collaborated closely with ABB to use ABB intelligent flow meters to monitor water flow in real time, and to further improve energy efficiency by using ABB variable frequency drives. This has benefited local communities by saving costs and increasing flexibility. Pumps account for a large proportion of energy consumption in public facilities, and they are also equipment that consumes high amounts of energy in the water cycle. ABB intelligent variable frequency drives can improve the energy efficiency of pumps and reduce energy consumption.
At the same time, built-in verification tools and health monitoring functions assist operators in ensuring the service life of equipment. After data recording is completed, it can be easily exported for further analysis and evaluation, allowing key factors to be identified as early as possible and remedial measures to be taken more quickly. Wellington Water provides water supply infrastructure management services for six local councils in New Zealand, including 105 pump stations, 248 sewage pump stations, 148 reservoirs, and 27 rainwater pump stations located in different locations.
Amina Hamidi, Global Head of the Measurement and Analysis Business Line at ABB, said, "This award is known as the 'Oscar Award' in the water industry, and winning this award is a strong recognition for us. Innovation is at the core of all our work. The Global Water Summit is one of the most
Paul Winstanley from Wellington Water said, "This award recognizes the successful collaboration between Wellington Water and ABB. We fully recognize that efficient management cannot be achieved without accurate measurement. Therefore, ABB's solutions are crucial for Wellington Water and our extensive water supply and drainage network. With ABB technology, we can ensure that every dro of water has a documented history."
